Initially, our mission was to support Alteo, the world’s leader in the production of specialty aluminum by bauxite processing, in the process of renewing its operating license, which required a transformation of its operating procedures to stop solid waste discharges in the Mediterranean on January, 1st 2016. Since then, CLAI has been helping the company to keep this authorization from being called into question.
CLAI intervened alongside Alteo throughout the authorization process, which required the assent of the environmental authorities and then of the board of directors of the Parc National des Calanques (Calanques National Park), as well as a public inquiry, and an opinion of the Higher Council of Prevention of technological risks and then of the Coderst (the county Council of environment and sanitary risks). In addition to political, administrative and NGO contacts and more generally contacts with all stakeholders, CLAI organized public meetings, prepared various informative tools – website, brochures, arguments, … – and contributed to media relations at each stage of the procedure.
Given that the new operating license decree is challenged before the courts, before the European Commission, and politically by various stakeholders, CLAI has been keeping on supporting the company in its defense since 2016.
